History of Contest

The Soul-Making Literary Competition was started in 1992 by Eileen Malone as a Poetry Contest to further enhance the outreach of
The Source Center for Spiritual Development and Wholeness which was founded by Janice Farrell, the then Regional Coordinator for Spiritual Directors International.

During those early days, Source Center members and students of Eileen Malone's Quicksilvering Experiential Creative Writing Intensives facilitated and judged the entries. Awards readings were held in the beautiful lower quarters of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and also in Chinatown's St. Mary's.

When Eileen Malone accepted the invitation of the
National League of American Pen Women, to join their Nob Hill, San Francisco Bay Area Branch they also offered her the opportunity to bring the competition under the Pen Women non-profit umbrella and thusly, provide free and open-to-the- public award readings at the Koret Auditorium in the then-new San Francisco Main Public Library, Civic Center.

Volunteers are always valued. We also welcome
donated materials and cash contributions so that we continue to keep our entry fees low and our Awards Event free..

We also appreciate past and current performing artists and welcome new ones to add movement, music, and song to our annual Awards Event.

The Soul-Making Literary Competition continues
onward in its own soul-making process of growth and expansion.  It is our group intent (sponsors, judges,
volunteer staff and generous donators)  to encourage,
support and validate a diversity of creative expressions and honor all others who do the same.
