KATE BRAVERMAN SHORT STORY PRIZE Sponsored/Judged by Kate Braverman
Up to 5,000 words. One story per entry. Judges' Comments: I am looking for stories that take leaps of pure literary magic, working by a subliminal mysterious process, thus they are works of alchemy and discovery. It is for this sense of discovery, of lines that appear as if they wrote themselves that I write and read. It’s not a question of connecting the dots for me, but finding dots where there are none. Most of what I read in contests these days are really TV sized visions painfully translated onto the page, their inspiration coming from another medium. The stories I choose are fundamentally indigenous to the page, as the aspirations come from the page itself.
LARSEN/ POMADA (SFWC)
CREATIVE NONFICTION PRIZE
Judged by Michael Larsen and Elizabeth Pomada
Sponsored by The San Francisco Writers Conference
Up to 3,000 words. One essay per entry. Judge's Comments: We define creative nonfiction as nonfiction that should read like a novel, with a story line and page-turnability. The characters should come alive (think Hunter S. Thompson or Truman Capote) and people should care about the world being portrayed. Basic “how-tos” or memoirs written purely for the writer, rather than the reader, with too many “I, I, I’s” don’t work. The prose and the voice really do count in creative nonfiction.
JOANNA CATHERINE SCOTT
NOVEL EXCERPT PRIZE
Sponsored/Judged by Joanna Catherine Scott
Send first 20 pages. Include a one page (single space ok) synopsis. Judges' Comments: I am looking for stories that absolutely make me turn the pages.
KATHRYN HANDLEY PROSE POEM PRIZE Sponsored/Judged by Kathryn Handley
Three poems per entry. One poem per page. Judges' Comments: Looking for beautiful language, strong images, consistent tone, and a lovely surprise tucked in the poem
CAROLYN A. CLARK FLASH FICTION PRIZE Sponsored/Judged by Carolyn A. Clark
Under 500 words. Three (short-short)stories per entry.
LOUISE CANEPA SONG/LYRIC PRIZE
Sponsored/Judged by Louise Canepa
One song/lyric per entry; sheet music must accompany lyrics; recordings welcome but not mandatory. Non-English okay. Collaberation okay. One award per work, not individual. Judges' Comments: I’m looking for neat, readable music scores with a professional touch in mind. All CD copies should be rechecked that music is actually on the copy! All scores that show a lack of penmanship (if done by hand) makes a poor presentation.
LINDA JOY MYERS MEMOIR PRIZE
Sponsored/Judged by Linda Joy Myers
One memoir per entry, up to 3,000 words. Judges' Comments: A memoir is a story that draws upon memory. Its plot, dialogue, scenes, and narration immerse me into the places, times, and characters of the story. It is not analysis or a list of things that simply happened. Meaning and an epiphany are part of a well-written memoir story, the "Soul-making " moment when everything changed. I want to be drawn into the new world of the story, eager to find out why I am reading it. Write the stories from your heart, write your memories and bring them alive. I look forward to reading your work.
RITA WILLIAMS YOUNG ADULT PROSE PRIZE Sponsored/Judged by Rita Williams
Grades 9-12 or equivalent age (which must be indicated on 3x5 card as well as mss). Up to 3,000 words in story, essay, journal entry, creative nonfiction or memoir.
SANDRA CARON YOUNG ADULT POETRY PRIZE Sponsored/Judged by Sandra Caron
Grades 9-12 or equivalent age (which must be indicated on 3x5 card as well as mss). Three poems per entry. One poem per page. One page poems only. Judges' Comments: I am drawn to vivid imagery through word choice and where applied rhyme that rings true (not forcing words into the verse). Look for the ability to succinctly capture an emotion, and a little shock value, used sparingly.
ROSALIE FLEMING MEMORIAL HUMOR PRIZE Sponsored/Judged by Mary Eastham
Up to 2,5000 words. One piece, any form, per entry. Judges' Comments: Make me laugh out loud.
TARA L. MASIH INTERCULTURAL ESSAY PRIZE
Sponsored/Judged by Tara L. Masih
Up to 6,000 words.Judges' Comments: I am looking for essays dealing with matters of culture, race, and a sense of place, either within the smaller microcosm of self-identity or within the larger environment of family, society and world interactions. I seek essays in the traditional form, my definition being the conscious shaping of nonfiction prose around a central idea or subject. In E. B. White’s words, you will be putting your “finger on a little capsule of truth,” using reality to point to your truth, not fiction.
