The National League of American Pen Women, Inc., was organized in 1897 and is headquartered in Washington, D.C.

The open, annual Soul-Making Literary Competition and its subsequent  Awards Reading was an extended community arts outreach program of the National League of American Pen Women, Nob Hill, San Francisco Bay Area Branch.

Another community arts outreach program, the television show Pen Women Presents: Interviews with Creative People Talking About Creativity! aired regularly on San Francisco Access Channel 29 and can be viewed now online via http://blip.tv/eileenmalone..

The Nob Hill Branch also coordinated both judged and juried art shows and exhibits. Branch members serve as judges, lecturers, teachers, coordinators and facilitators for a variety of arts related community and outreach events and in partnership with City College of San Francisco, sponsors an annual scholarship for a mature woman in the arts. 

Since the Nob Hill, San Francisco Branch disbanded, the Soul Making Keats Literary Competition operates under the auspices of Pen Women's National Headquarters.l
